1 in 7 Americans Struggle to Get Enough Food
WASHINGTON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - More than 49 million Americans -- one in seven -- struggle to get enough to eat, the highest total in 14 years of a federal survey on "food insecurity," the U.S. government said on Monday.

WORCESTER —  Hospitals are in business to help people get healthy. Part of their mission is to help people stay healthy.

Can hospitals also help end hunger?

Federal, state and local leaders gathered at UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus yesterday to unveil an initiative that encourages hospitals to take an active role in the fight against hunger.

 
Fighting Obesity May Take A Village
This Wall Street Journal Article highlights community-based efforts to resolve hunger and obesity.  Hunger-Free & Healthy, as well as many projects across the nation, are using these strategies and philosophies to create true community food security, or community food systems where all community members have dignified access to healthy, safe, affordable, culturally appropriate food.  
 
Economy's woes driving more people to local food pantries

 
* Despite the rise in requests and the struggling economy, the Worcester County Food Bank, where demand for food assistance jumped 13 percent, the agency was fortunate to have also received a boost in support from individuals, schools, companies, and the state government, which helped the food bank meet the increasing demand.



 
Nutritional know-how funded

January 9, 2008 - The plan, John McGovern recalls, was to have students enrolled at the city’s Adult Learning Center prepare and bring traditional Thanksgiving foods for a pre-holiday party. What ended up on the buffet table in November, however, was an overabundance of snack and cellophane-packaged fare, and a shortage of food that students actually had a hand in making.
